History of Fátima
Fátima became internationally known after the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children in 1917. The events took place at Cova da Iria, where the Sanctuary of Fátima now stands. The apparitions were recognised by the Catholic Church in 1930, turning the small village into one of the world’s leading pilgrimage centres.
Culture and traditions
Fátima has a deeply religious culture shaped by the apparitions and its welcome to pilgrims. Religious crafts, rosaries and sacred images are produced locally, while the region’s restaurants serve simple and authentic Portuguese cuisine.
