Sintra has been inhabited since prehistoric times, but became especially important during the Moorish period and the nineteenth century, when the Portuguese royal family built its summer palaces here. Pena Palace, with its vibrant colours and Romantic architecture, is one of Portugal’s most recognisable landmarks. The town is also home to the National Palace of Sintra, the Moorish Castle and Quinta da Regaleira.
Sintra is known for its handicrafts, traditional queijadas and travesseiros pastries, as well as its romantic and artistic atmosphere. Music festivals and cultural events take place throughout the year, while local cuisine combines Portuguese traditions with modern influences.
